Assam: Police in Tinsukia arrested a 46-year-old man for allegedly beating a 5-year-old girl in Sripuria area on Friday night. The accused, identified as June Haloi, who runs a makeshift fish shop, lured the girl on the pretext of giving her chocolates and took her away. The incident came to light after the girl narrated her ordeal to her mother, raising concerns amid the ongoing outrage over the safety of children in Assam after the recent Nagaon gangrape case. Tinsukia Superintendent of Police Abhijit Gurav confirmed the arrest and said a police team raided the accused’s shop after a complaint was lodged but he had fled. “We tracked him down to Panitola, about 11 km west of Tinsukia, and arrested him the same night,” Gurav said. The case has been registered under Section 75(2) of the Juvenile Justice Act as well as stringent provisions of the POCSO Act. “Our target is to file a chargesheet within 10 days,” said Gurav. In another case, the Tinsukia police secured a conviction in a separate rape case within two months and 29 days. The accused was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment following a speedy investigation led by investigating officer Nipen Gogoi, who filed a chargesheet within seven days. Under the leadership of Superintendent Gurav, the Tinsukia police have doubled the conviction rate in the last 18 months to over 18%.
