Man 75 Attempts To Burn Daughter In Law For Giving Birth To Girl In Odisha

Bhubaneswar: An uncle was angry over his daughter-in-law giving birth to a baby girl. He poured petrol on the sleeping mother and the baby and tried to burn her alive. However, the woman escaped the fire along with the newborn baby. She fled the house. She stayed outside with the baby all night. Sushanta Rai of Damarpur village and Sushmita of Nishchintakoili Balipadu village were married eight years ago. Husband Sushant already has two daughters from a previous marriage.
Recently, Sushmita gave birth to a baby girl. Her 75-year-old uncle Prafulla Roy was furious. He bought petrol from a nearby village. At night, he poured petrol on her daughter-in-law Sushmita, who was sleeping on the bed with the baby, and set her on fire.
On the other hand, Sushmita woke up to a sudden fire in the room. She immediately took her baby daughter and ran outside. She escaped the fire in time. She stayed outside with her baby all night.
However, the fire destroyed all the belongings in the house. The locals who noticed this informed the police and fire personnel. They reached there. The police came to know that Sushmita was being harassed by her husband and uncle since the birth of the baby girl. The uncle, Prafulla Roy, who tried to burn the mother and the child alive, was arrested. A case has been registered against him under various sections and an investigation is underway, a police officer said.
