Major discussion on nuclear cooperation between India and France

Delhi : An important discussion took place between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron to further strengthen cooperation in the nuclear energy sector. The talks particularly focused on enhancing partnership in modern nuclear technology areas such as Small and Advanced Modular Reactors (SMRs).
The conversation took place during the Prime Minister’s visit to France, where the two leaders had detailed discussions on energy security, clean energy and the future of technical cooperation. Both countries agreed that in the coming times, nuclear energy will play an important role in meeting global energy needs and cooperation in this should be given a new direction.
On this occasion, Narendra Modi and Emmanuel Macron focused special attention on the development, manufacturing and technical partnership of small and advanced nuclear reactors. The two leaders recognized that SMR technology can help make future energy production safer, cheaper and environment-friendly.
Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri informed in a special briefing during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Nice that India has invited French nuclear companies for direct participation in its nuclear energy sector. This invitation is considered to be a part of India’s new policy direction, which aims to increase international cooperation and bring advanced technology into the country.
The briefing was also informed that India has proposed a new framework under the “SHANTI Act” to take this cooperation forward. Through this Act, foreign companies will get an opportunity to participate in the Indian nuclear sector in a more transparent and structured manner.
Both India and France agreed that cooperation in the energy sector should not be limited to large reactors only, but new technologies like small modular reactors should also be worked on rapidly. This will not only increase energy production capacity but will also help in reducing carbon emissions.
According to experts, this move by India can open doors for new investment and technical cooperation in the global nuclear market. France is already among the leaders in nuclear energy technology, and its partnership with India could provide strategic and economic benefits to both countries.
Issues like energy security, climate change and long-term stable energy supply were also discussed in the meeting. Both the leaders emphasized that technical cooperation and trustworthy partnerships between countries are extremely important to face global challenges.
Overall, this discussion on India-France nuclear cooperation points towards major changes in the energy sector in the coming years, in which modern technology and international partnership will play an important role.
