Mahindra Thar rocks ahead of launch on August 15

Business: Indian auto giant Mahindra & Mahindra is gearing up for an important launch with the introduction of its 5-door Thar model, the Thar Rocks, which will be launched on India’s Independence Day in 2024. The company has recently released new pictures, offering a closer glimpse of this much-awaited vehicle. The fresh pictures highlight the new features of the Thar Rocks, including an updated grille, redesigned lights, and newly styled alloy wheels. For the first time, Mahindra has showcased the Thar Rocks in a classic black variant as well as an attractive white body colour option. These official pictures, shared on Mahindra’s social media platforms, show the Thar Rocks in both black and white colours. Notable design elements include silver accents, such as on the side step that runs between the front and rear tyres. The alloy wheels, featuring a unique windmill-inspired design, are a new addition to both the Thar series and Mahindra’s wider SUV lineup.

In terms of design updates, the rear quarter glass now has a triangular shape, and the wheel arches have been redesigned with a more angular, squared-off look than the current Thar model. The front fascia features a refreshed grille, with C-shaped daytime running lights (DRL) surrounding the headlights. The fog lamps are located on either side of the bumper, adding to the vehicle’s robust presence. Mahindra is emphasising on the advanced features that make the Thar Rocks stand out from its predecessors. Apart from the Thar’s robust off-road capabilities, the Thar Rocks will get ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) and a large infotainment screen. Under the hood, while official details are yet to be confirmed, according to HT Auto, it is expected that the Thar Rocks will come with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, similar to the ones found in the XUV700 and Scorpio-N models. There is also a possibility of a 2.2-litre mHawk Gen2 diesel engine, with both manual and automatic transmission options. Built on a slightly updated platform, the Thar Rocks is expected to weigh around 40 kg less than its predecessor while it will also have a longer wheelbase for better road presence.
