Maharashtra: The Mumbai Municipal Corporation administration has started taking strict measures to improve the deteriorating air quality in Mumbai. Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani on Monday ordered the closure of construction sites in Borivali East and Byculla, as the air quality in the area has reached the very poor category. Accordingly, the municipal administration on Tuesday issued a stop work notice to 78 construction sites in Byculla and Borivali. This includes 45 construction sites in Borivali and 33 in Byculla area.
The air quality in Mumbai has been deteriorating for the last several days, raising concerns about the health of Mumbaikars. The municipal administration has started implementing various measures to improve air quality. To reduce pollution caused by construction projects, Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani has taken the initiative and issued detailed guidelines on 28 points. Also, it has been made mandatory for project promoters/building developers and construction project (mechanical and electrical) contractors to prepare an Environmental Management Plan (EMP). The Department of Environment and Climate Change inspected a total of 877 construction projects in Mumbai last month.
Also, it was checked whether the 28-point guidelines were being followed or not. However, it was observed that the rules were being violated at many places. So far, the Municipal Corporation has issued show cause and stop work notices to 286 construction projects violating the rules. Meanwhile, the air quality in Byculla and Borivali East has reached the very poor category, posing a threat to the health of citizens. Therefore, the Municipal Administration on Tuesday issued stop work notices to 33 construction sites in Byculla and 45 in Borivali East. If the developers do not respond positively even after issuing notices, strict action will be taken against them. The air quality level has deteriorated in Mumbai due to the massive development and construction work going on, including changes in the air. The Municipal Corporation has implemented immediate, short-term and long-term measures to control air pollution. Under this, the Municipal Corporation has announced a new policy regarding digging trenches on roads.
According to this, digging trenches on roads has been banned in Mumbai. Except for the repair work of main water supply pipelines, no new digging of pits will be allowed, this was clarified by Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani on Tuesday. It has been concluded that digging of pits is increasing air pollution. For this reason, Bhushan Gagrani has ordered the Assistant Commissioners of all administrative departments and Deputy Chief Engineers of the Road and Transport Department to ban digging of pits for dust control measures. This ban will remain in force till further orders.
