Maharashtra government abolishes 5 percent Muslim quota

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has announced that it is scrapping the five percent reservation for Muslims in jobs and education. The government issued a resolution in this regard on Tuesday. The five percent ordinance issued earlier has expired. The court has also stayed that decision. The previous Congress-NCP government had provided 16 percent reservation quota for Marathas and five percent for Muslims in education and employment in a bid to create jobs. An ordinance was also issued in this context. The ordinance was issued stating that five percent reservation should be given to Muslim groups under the Backward Classes to provide education and jobs. The government has revoked the circulars issued in 2014. It has stopped issuing caste qualification papers and non-creamy layer certificates to Muslims under OBC.
