Maharashtra: 4,872 infants died during April-October, health minister said in Assembly

At least 4,872 infants died in Maharashtra between April and October this year, with an average of 23 deaths per day, Health Minister Tanaji Sawant said in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday.

That said, 795 (16 percent) of the 4,872 infants died from respiratory illnesses. In a written reply to a question by Deputy Sachin Kalyanshetty during the question round, the minister said that the highest number of deaths have been reported in Mumbai, Thane, Solapur, Akola and Nandurbar.

The minister said, “4,872 children died in Maharashtra between April and October this year. The age of the children who died was between zero and 28 days. “According to the death statistics, on an average 23 children die every day.”

Let us tell you that there are 52 special rooms operating in Maharashtra for the care of newborn babies.

“All sick children get free medicines, tests and transportation to public hospitals,” the minister said.
