Magnitude 6.0 earthquake strikes off Peru coast

Lima: A powerful earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Peru on Saturday, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). According to the NCS, the epicentre was located at latitude 16.13 South and longitude 74.59 West at a depth of 60 kilometres. The earthquake struck off the coast of Peru at 12:35 pm (IST). In a post on X, the NCS said, “EQ of M: 6.0, On: 29/06/2024 12:35:37 IST, Latitude: 16.13 South, Longitude: 74.59 West, Depth: 60 kilometres, Location: off the coast of Peru.” No casualties have been reported so far. Further details are awaited. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), an earthquake of magnitude 7.2 on the Richter scale struck off the southern coast of Peru on Friday. Going to X, the USGS posted, “Notable earthquake, preliminary magnitude information: M 7.2, 28 km depth, 8 km west of Atikipa, Peru.” In the statement, the USGS said, “The magnitude M 7.2 earthquake off the coast of southern Peru on June 28, 2024 occurred as a result of shallow thrust faulting at or near the boundary between the South America Plate and the subducting Nazca Plate.”
