Ludhiana: Training programme on preservation of vegetables

Ludhiana: Combatting unemployment through self-reliance, the Skill Development Centre of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has organized a five-day training programme on “Preservation of Fruits and Vegetables at Household Level” for farmers and rural women of the state to help them bring economic stability for family honour. Organised in collaboration with the Department of Food Science and Technology, PAU, the training was conducted under the leadership of Director Extension Education MS Bhullar and imparted training to 55 trainees.
During this, 85 farmers from Jammu and Kashmir visited PAU to gain practical expertise in mushroom cultivation, oilseed production and seed production of various crops. Additional Director Extension Education TS Dhillon said that it is important to share expertise related to preservation of fruits and vegetables at household level to avoid food wastage and judicious use of daily essential commodities, thereby providing nutritious dishes to consumers as well as family members at a nominal cost. Additionally, he said that PAU is open for skill enhancement of farmers. Arshdeep Singh, Hanuman Bobde, Neha Babbar, Sukhpreet Kaur, Jagbir Rehal and Vikas Kumar explained about food safety, packaging and labelling techniques, causes of rotting of fruits and vegetables as well as their management.
