Ludhiana: Policeman arrested while taking bribe of Rs 2.70 lakh

Ludhiana: The Vigilance Bureau (VB) on Monday arrested Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Charanjit Singh posted at Division Number 5 Police Station for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 2,70,000. The ASI surrendered before the bureau after a corruption case was registered against him. Giving this information here today, an official spokesperson of the State Vigilance Bureau said that the case has been registered against the said police personnel on the basis of a complaint lodged in the Chief Minister’s Anti-Corruption Action Line by Kamaljit Ahuja, owner of Hotel Taj, near Jawahar Nagar Camp, Bus Stand.

He said that the hotel owner had alleged in his online complaint that the said ASI had taken illegal bribe from him by threatening to add Sections 307, 379-B of IPC in the case already registered in Division Number 5 Police Station against his family members and was demanding more bribe from him. The spokesperson said that during verification, the allegations made in the complaint were found to be true as oral evidence as well as recording of conversation between the complainant and the suspect ASI Charanjit Singh was found. He further said that as per the investigation, it has been prima facie proved that the ASI had taken a bribe of Rs 2,70,000 on behalf of SHO of Division No. 5 police station. The ASI had also demanded a bribe of Rs 2 lakh per month to allow the complainant to run his hotel. The spokesperson said that on the basis of the investigation report, a case has been registered against the ASI under Prevention of Corruption Act at VB police station of Ludhiana range. He said that during the investigation, the role of the concerned SHO and other officers will also be investigated.
