Lorry driver protests against hit-and-run law changes spark ORR traffic chaos

Hyderabad: Truck drivers from the state have started protesting on Keesara Highway in Hyderabad against the new traffic and anti-fugitive law brought in by the Central government.

Conductors blocked the highway with vehicles, causing a standoff on the ORR that lasted for hours.

Earlier, on January 1, conductors across the country had begun protests against a provision of the new penal law relating to road accidents and runaways.

The controversial provision imposes severe penalties, including a jail term of up to 10 years or a fine of Rs 7 lakh, on drivers involved in serious traffic accidents due to reckless driving who later leave the scene without informing the authorities. ,
