Built in 1851, the Victorian-era prison HMP Wandsworth has suffered from severe overcrowding and deteriorating conditions. Recent inspections have revealed widespread violence, vermin and serious staff problems. The facilities available at the prison have been described as inadequate. There are currently more than 1,500 prisoners inside the prison.
