Liquor trader’s family attacks excise officials

Cuttack: Excise officials faced the wrath of the family of an illicit liquor trader during a raid at a house in Dalua under Khuntuni police limits in Athagarh on Saturday.

The family of accused Surendra Swain (42) attacked a team of Cuttack mobile squad and Athagarh excise officials led by Excise Superintendent Debashish Patel during a raid at their house in the village. The family also vandalized the team’s Bolero SUV.

“The team raided Surendra’s house and seized illicit liquor and raw material. When we took Surendra into custody, 10 to 15 members of his family pushed and assaulted the team members. They tried to snatch Surendra from our custody and vandalized our vehicle,” Patel said.
As the situation worsened, a team from Khuntuni police station reached the spot and rescued the excise officials. “We have lodged a complaint at Khuntuni police station regarding the incident,” Patel said. Surendra was also involved in attacking excise officials on July 28 last year.
