Liquor being sold at overrate in government liquor shops of Hathband and Hirmi
Baloda Bazar. Consumers’ displeasure with government liquor shops in Baloda Bazar-Bhatapara district has once again surfaced. Government liquor shops in Hathband and Hirmi villages have been accused of overrating, or selling liquor above the prescribed rate. Local consumers and villagers have reportedly submitted complaint applications to the Excise Department, demanding an immediate ban and strict and legal action against the culprits. The complainants allege that various brands of liquor are being sold at both shops at rates higher than the MRP. The application states that overrating is being practiced despite clear government instructions, while the sale of liquor above the prescribed price is strictly prohibited by law. The complaint, calling this a criminal act, states that such activities are leading to economic exploitation of consumers and increasing public discontent. Villagers say that customers are often not provided with bills at the time of purchase, making it difficult to verify overpricing. Some consumers claimed that when they requested liquor at the prescribed rate, shop employees became uncooperative. This is fueling resentment among ordinary shoppers. Residents of the affected villages have demanded that the shops prominently display the rate list, MRP, and consumer rights information.
The application also warned that if effective action is not taken against overpricing after receiving the application, the matter will be duly reported to the district administration and further action will be taken. The complainants have urged the Excise Department to conduct a prompt investigation, ensure strict compliance with regulations, and take necessary punitive action if found guilty. Local social activists and concerned citizens have also described the issue as serious, stating that transparency and accountability are expected from government-run shops. If rules are being violated in government-run shops, it calls into question the credibility of the government. They have demanded regular inspections, monitoring, and strengthened grievance redressal mechanisms.
Attempts were made to contact Excise Department officials regarding this matter, but an official response was not received at the time of writing. However, department sources stated that the complaints were being considered and that an investigation could be initiated as per regulations. According to departmental rules, charging above the MRP is punishable, and fines or other disciplinary action is possible if found guilty. Currently, these allegations against the government liquor shops in Hathbandh and Hirmi have become a topic of discussion in the area. Consumers are now keenly watching for possible action by the administration and the Excise Department to effectively curb complaints like overcharging.
