Life imprisonment for 6 convicts in Dhubri murder case

Assam: In a significant verdict delivered nearly 15 years later, the Court of the Additional Sessions Judge in Dhubri, on March 17, sentenced six individuals to life imprisonment in connection with a 2011 murder case registered at the Dhubri Police Station.
This case (Dhubri PS FIR No. 605/2011) pertains to the brutal murder of Ashan Ali in the Kuntirchar area, near Dhubri town, on November 2, 2011. According to the prosecution, the victim was attacked with sharp-edged weapons by a group of accused individuals while he was returning home from agricultural work.
While delivering the verdict, Additional Sessions Judge Syed Burhanur Rahman convicted Raj Ali, Bimla Bewa, Amjad Ali, Azad Ali alias Mandal Ali, Momiron Bibi, and Sajad Ali under Sections 302/149 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The court sentenced all six individuals to rigorous life imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹10,000 on each of them. A provision for additional imprisonment has been stipulated in the event of non-payment of the fine.
The court also convicted the accused under Sections 324/149 and 326/149 of the IPC, sentencing them to rigorous imprisonment of two years and five years, respectively, along with fines. All sentences are to run concurrently.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on November 2, 2011, at approximately 10:00 AM, when the victim was returning from his paddy field. The accused—who were allegedly armed with axes and other sharp-edged weapons—attacked him as part of a premeditated plan. The victim sustained severe injuries and subsequently succumbed to them, while several other individuals who attempted to intervene were also injured. This verdict, which was reserved on March 7, 2026, was pronounced on March 17, 2026. With this, a lengthy trial came to a conclusion—one that had commenced with the filing of the chargesheet in 2015 and the framing of charges in 2016.
One of the accused named in this case, Khalil Uddin, reportedly passed away during the trial, leading to the termination of proceedings against him. This verdict brings a decade-old case to a close and underscores the court’s firm stance against incidents of mob violence that result in the loss of life and property.
