Leopard attacks after a week, kills another calf in Nuapada

Nuapada: The leopard, which has created havoc in the villages around Sunabeda Wildlife Sanctuary in Odisha’s Nuapada district, killed another calf late Saturday night.

As per reports, Arjun Dharua of Belardana village under Komna range in the district, had kept the calf in his cow shed on Saturday night. But he found it missing next morning. During search, Arjun found the carcass of the missing calf inside Bangaghati forest.

On being informed, a team of forest officials visited the village and started an investigation into the incident. They have examined the pug marks found from the place where the calf’s body was found.

The villagers of Belardana suspected that the same leopard, which has hunted several cattle in nearby villages, had killed the calf.

Notably, a leopard had killed the calf of a villager of Kodapali under Dharambandha police limits while it was grazing in the nearby forest on March 25. Later, during investigation, forest officials had found pug marks of a wild animal.

As many as 15 domestic animals and an elderly woman have been killed by leopard in the district in the last one month. Over six domestic animals and a woman, identified as Sanamati Barik (65), of Jalamadhei village under Komna block have fallen victim to the big cat.
