Lahore Book Shop: Reviving the Tradition of Reading in a Digital World

Punjab: In an era dominated by Kindles, e-books and audiobooks, Lahore Book Shop, one of Ludhiana’s oldest bookstores, continues to hold its ground, encouraging the timeless art of reading traditional paperbacks. Established by Jivan Singh in 1941 on Nisbat Road in pre-independence Lahore, this bookstore is now located near Society Plaza (formerly Society Cinema) in the historic lanes of Ludhiana. The shop has seen many generations and changing times. There was a time when books were cherished and readers frequented the shop. However, there was also a period when youngsters would come surreptitiously, as parents feared that excessive reading of novels would lead to missing out on important activities like studies, social interactions or physical exercise. Today, the situation has changed and parents are now encouraging their children to read, often bringing them along as children are increasingly immersed in their smartphones.
Life has truly come full circle at this beloved bookstore. Gurmanat Singh, the current owner of Lahore Book Shop, recognised the importance of keeping up with the modern world. He adopted the popular saying, “Whatever is seen, goes for it”, and expanded the shop’s presence online as well. “We have launched a website and an Instagram account so that people can find us. With online shopping becoming a trend, we have made this facility available for readers who find it difficult to visit the old city area,” said Gurmanat. After offering the option of online shopping, the shop has seen a rise in orders. “I wouldn’t say we are overwhelmed with orders, but slowly, the interest is increasing. The younger generation needs to get involved in book reading; otherwise, they will lose the charm of turning pages and gaining knowledge, instead getting lost in endless scrolling on screens,” said Gurmanat. Ritu, a recent online customer, shared her experience: “There are many Instagram accounts promoting book reading and recommending books. I came across one such account, and was shocked to see the choices and options of books available. I realised how I had let my reading habit fade away. I am happy to have rediscovered my old hobby of reading books, and I was very happy to know that Lahore Book Shop, where I used to buy books from, still exists and delivers online. Without hesitation, I ordered some books for myself.” Retired Professor Kulwant Singh said, “I am a regular visitor to Lahore Book Shop and am happy to see how this historic bookstore is rekindling the love of reading not only among the people of Ludhiana but across the world.” Lahore Book Shop maintains the tradition of physical books, adapting to modern trends without losing the essence of its long-established mission: keeping the joy of reading alive.
