Kullu: Boost to Bijli Mahadev, ropeway projects exempted from forest clearance
Himachal Pradesh: In a significant move, the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has exempted ropeway projects from the requirement of forest clearance. The decision has given impetus to the ambitious Bijli Mahadev ropeway project undertaken by National Highways Logistics Management Limited in Kullu. Earlier, the company was required to submit a deposit of Rs 6 crore including compensatory afforestation (CA), net present value (NPV) and cost of 80 trees to get the final permission. However, the recent exemption has eliminated the requirement of clearance under the Forest Conservation Act (FCA), 1980 and waived off the NPV payment.
The Bijli Mahadev ropeway, which has been stalled since September despite the arrival of machinery and material at Pirdi, 4 km from Kullu, is now set for faster execution. The development will reduce the cost and delay of the project, as ropeway projects are now considered eco-friendly by the government. The tourism sector in Kullu and Bhuntar, which has been badly affected by fewer footfalls due to the new four-lane bypass, is optimistic about the ropeway’s potential. Entrepreneur Arun Sharma highlighted its role in reviving the local tourism industry, generating employment and improving access for pilgrims to the Bijli Mahadev temple. Similarly, hotelier Rahul Sood called for expediting more such attractions and eco-tourism projects in the Lugh Valley and nearby areas to attract domestic and international tourists.
Despite the optimism, some locals and environmentalists are concerned. Critics fear the project could disturb the sanctity of the area, citing resistance from some local deities. Environmentalists have raised concerns about the carrying capacity of the area, urging the government to develop infrastructure and protect the fragile ecology before embarking on large-scale projects. The Bijli Mahadev Ropeway is now seen as a symbol of Kullu’s attempt to strike a balance between development and sustainability, offering hope to the struggling tourism industry while addressing environmental challenges.
