Know what is duralumin?

Duralumin is an alloy of aluminium. This alloy can be easily molded and forged. Along with the high tensile strength of duralumin, its electrical conductivity is also high. When duralumin remains at atmospheric pressure, it remains hard. The specific heat of this alloy is 0.214. 650°C is required for smelting this alloy.

Duralumin – Composition, Properties & Uses

The heat treatment of duralumin is in the range of 360°C to 400°C. After heat treatment, it is cooled in air.

Salt baths are used to heat treat heat. This salt bath contains 50% silver nitrate and 50% potassium nitrate. There are also other types of fittings in this salt bath which use a muffle furnace for heat treatment.

Composition of Duralumin (Composition of Duralumin in Hindi) -:

Duralumin contains aluminum 94%, copper 4%, magnesium 0.5%, manganese 0.5%, silicon 0.05%, iron 0.5%.

Al = 94%

Cu = 4%

Mg = 0.05%

Mn = 0.05%

Si = 0.05%

Fe = 0.05%

Properties of Duralumin -:

  1. Duralumin has a specific gravity of 2.85 and a specific heat of 0.214.
  2. When this alloy is quenched after heat treatment, it maintains ductility for a long time.
  3. The melting point of duralumin is 650°C.
  4. The electrical conductivity of this alloy is higher than that of aluminium.
  5. Duralumin alloy can be easily processed by casting and forging.
  6. The tensile strength of duralumin alloy is high.
  7. When this alloy is kept at atmospheric temperature, it hardens.
  8. When heat treatment of duraluminum alloy is done by annealing process, then after that the hardness of this alloy remains under 60 BHN.
