KMC to hold Covid awareness drives in markets

KOLKATA: Amidst a surge in cases, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s Covid task force will conduct special awareness meetings at major municipal markets asking traders and shoppers to wear masks. KMC’s solid waste management department will conduct regular sanitization drives in market areas where Covid cases are on the rise. Mayor Firhad Hakim issued these instructions in a meeting with KMC officials on Wednesday.
KMC health department will work with the civic body’s market department to motivate stall owners and shoppers to mask up. “The Covid task force will be doing rounds. Apart from awareness, we’ll need a sanitization drive at markets which had become Covid hostspots. The next two months will be crucial,” said a KMC health department official.
The KMC’s market department was asked to inform superintendents to interact with traders and alert shoppers, said a civic official. Some of the markets where the drives will be held include Kankurgachhi, Maniktala, Baithakkhana (Sealdah), Taltala, Jadubabur Bazar, Lansdowne, Gariahat, Bijoygarh, Azadgarh, Bansdroni Baghajatin, Behala among others.
