Kendrapara: Chameli Ojha granted bail.

Kendrapara: Tikhiri Panchayat Sarpanch Chameli Ojha was granted bail by the JMFC Court, Kendrapara on Tuesday in connection with the Mahakalapada block office altercation case. The court allowed bail on two sureties of Rs. 30,000 each.

Chameli Ojha, 33, was arrested on June 14 after her bail plea was earlier rejected and she was sent to judicial custody.

The case stems from a June 11 incident at the Mahakalapada BDO office where she allegedly abused BDO Rabi Narayan Acharya and assaulted police personnel while demanding clearance of pending development bills. Her brother Suryakanta was also arrested.

Chameli Ojha counter-alleged she was assaulted by police and supporters of the local BJP MLA inside the block office and later in custody. The arrest sparked political protests, with BJD and Congress seeking a fair probe.

An NHRC complaint has also been filed alleging unlawful arrest and assault. The Odisha government has sought a detailed report on the incident.
