Justice Khanna is going to be the next Chief Justice of the country

Chief Justice of India: On November 10, 2024, Supreme Court Chief Justice DY Chandrachud is retiring from his post. He has sent the name of Justice Sanjiv Khanna to the Central Government for the next Chief Justice of the country. Let us tell you that the appointment of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court is usually done according to the principle of seniority.

The CJI is the head of the Supreme Court Collegium, which recommends the appointment of judges in the Supreme Court and various High Courts of the country. CJI DY Chandrachud is going to retire after holding office for 2 years. Before the end of his term, he has recommended the name of his successor.

Justice Sanjiv Khanna will take over as Chief Justice on November 11, 2024 for a term of 6 months. He will remain in his post till May 13, 2025. After this he will retire. In January 2019, he was promoted to the Supreme Court from the Delhi High Court. He is currently on the roster for company law, arbitration, service law, maritime law, civil law and commercial law, among others.

In his four-and-a-half-year tenure, Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been part of 358 benches and delivered over 90 judgments. In 2023, he delivered the Constitution Bench judgment in Shilpa Shailesh. In UOI vs UCC, he was part of the bench that ruled on a petition seeking additional compensation for Bhopal gas tragedy victims.

Last year, he was part of a 3-judge bench that heard reservation in promotions for SCs and STs. In 2019, he delivered the majority judgment in the famous ‘RTI Judgment’. In 2022, he held that arbitrators cannot unilaterally fix their fees.
