Jio and Qualcomm expected to launch an affordable 5G smartphone soon in India

Reliance Jio and chipset manufacturing company Qualcomm are expected to be working together for an affordable 5G smartphone. The smartphone that will be made with the joint venture of the above-mentioned companies is expected to be a game charger in terms of 5G adoption. As, the upcoming smartphone by Jio and Qualcomm is expected to be under Rs 10,000 we can expect the transition of 4G to 5G even faster.

The new device by Jio-Qualcomm is expected to be launched by the end of 2024 and the expected price should be under Rs 8000 or $99. Even though Jio had partnered with Google to launch the JioPhone Next, it was not something of a success. However, the partnership with Qualcomm is expected to work perfectly. Qualcomm can deliver chipsets for an affordable 5G smartphone.

“With the new chipset, we are looking to give a full 5G experience to consumers looking for affordable smartphones,” said Chris Patrick, SVP and General Manager of Handsets, Qualcomm, reported Money Control.

The affordable 5G smartphone under Jio-Qualcomm has the potential to increase 4G transition to 5G. The use of Qualcomm chipset in the low-cost 5G smartphone will increase the confidence among people for the handset. Additionally, the affordable smartphone will be able to support 5G SA (standalone) that is deployed by Jio across India.

We can expect that the 5G chipset that will power the next Jio phone might be used by other OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) to make their own low-cost 5G devices at some point. This will help increase the 5G adoption at a record speed.

Speaking about 5G, Jio’s prime rival in the telecom sector- Airtel is also aggressively pushing towards 5G adoption. Recently the telecom service provider has announced that it will be offering connectivity in India’s first underwater metro in Kolkata. In doing so, Bharti Airtel will be the first telecom service provider in the country. The underwater metro service will resume soon in Kolkata and will be connecting Howrah Station, Mahakaran, and Esplanade.
