Jalandhar: Students resume classes after floods, but rain threat looms again

Jalandhar: After nearly two months of disruption due to devastating floods, students have finally returned to their school buildings in Baupur Mand (Sultanpur Lodhi) and Dhakkha Basti (Shahkot). Regular classes resumed last week at Government Primary School Dhakkha Basti, and about two days ago at Government Primary School Baupur and Government High School Baupur Jadid—marking a significant milestone in the rehabilitation process of these flood-affected areas. However, rain again disrupted access to the school buildings today. Many students were unable to reach the campus. Rain warnings for the next three days have increased the anxiety of school staff and parents. During the flood crisis, when school buildings were closed, classes were moved to the modest home of a midday meal cook in Dhakkha Basti village.
In this makeshift arrangement, over 40 students continued their education in cramped but comfortable conditions. Despite the challenges, a team of three dedicated teachers braved damaged roads, slippery paths, and muddy fields, walking 1.5 kilometers every day to ensure that learning wasn’t disrupted. “Our children have endured a lot. We can’t let the floods ruin their education,” said one teacher, who remained committed to teaching even under the most difficult conditions. Teachers expressed concern about the academic disruptions students were already facing. “They have been away from regular studies for a very long time. Online classes weren’t a viable option for most of our students. It will take time to rebuild their routines and complete the syllabus,” said one teacher. Despite uncertain weather and infrastructure challenges, the school community’s spirits remain unwavering.
