Jalandhar: Massive campaign launched to prevent traffic jams and increase safety

Jalandhar: In a decisive move to ease traffic congestion and strengthen security, the city police has rolled out a series of stringent measures aimed at ensuring public safety and order. The new initiatives include making strict registration and verification processes mandatory for auto-rickshaw drivers, as well as enhanced night-time security drives across the city. From the coming weeks, all auto-rickshaws in the city must be registered and drivers will have to undergo police verification. “This initiative will see the integration of a sophisticated software system that will maintain an up-to-date database of all registered three-wheelers and their drivers. Each auto-rickshaw will display a QR code that passengers can scan to verify the driver’s registration and clearance status, thereby enhancing transparency and security,” Jalandhar Police Commissioner (CP) Swapan Sharma said. He further added, “To streamline the traffic flow, designated auto-rickshaw stops will be set up in busy market areas and other high traffic areas. The measure is aimed at preventing chaotic road situations caused by sudden turns and indiscriminate stops by auto-rickshaws.” “The police have started approaching auto unions and urged them to prepare a comprehensive list of registered vehicles and drivers to facilitate this change,” the CP added. Sharma stressed the importance of these measures and highlighted the need for cooperation with auto unions and maintaining order on the roads. “Also, special focus will be given to no-tolerance zones, to ensure their effective implementation to reduce traffic violations,” he added. Apart from these traffic management efforts, the police have also intensified security measures during night time.

A special night patrolling drive was carried out on August 2 under the leadership of ACP (Licensing) Satinder Kumar and Inspector Harinder Singh. The focus of the drive was on areas with high traffic at night such as railway station, bus stand and Model Town. During the drive, police teams conducted intensive checking of banks, ATMs and other sensitive places. A total of 26 zebra (four-wheeler) teams and 13 Romeo (two-wheeler) teams were deployed to enhance security. Suspicious persons were tracked and questioned to maintain a safe atmosphere in the city. “Jalandhar Commissionerate Police is committed to ensuring public safety and has called upon the residents to cooperate in implementing the new measures. Through these intensified efforts, we aim to create a safer and more organised environment for the residents in the city,” the CP said.
