Jalandhar: City markets decked up in lights and flowers, immersed in festivities

Jalandhar: With Diwali just three days away, J-Town is all ablaze to embrace the festive spirit. Nearly all shops, complexes, hotels, and other commercial establishments are adorned with vibrant lights, festoons, marigold flowers, and rangoli. Model Town Market is known for its grandeur: the entire market is adorned with matching fairy lights, giving it a uniform and attractive look. Elegant and vibrant floral decorations welcome visitors to the shops. Sweet shops, with their fragrant aromas, are selling traditional sweets, baked sweets, dried fruits, and gift hampers, capitalizing on the increased demand for the festival. All the city’s markets—including Model Town, Renik Bazaar, Lajpat Nagar, and New Jawahar Nagar—are witnessing heavy footfall of shoppers. Fairy lights, star-shaped lights, lanterns, water-sensor diyas, and waterfall lights are being sold in shops at Phagwara Gate Market, considered a one-stop destination for festive lighting. Sales of electronic goods like home appliances also see a surge during the festive season, as people often purchase them for themselves or as gifts. A trade fair is being held at the Desh Bhagat Yadgar Hall for home decor needs. Painted brass showpieces, wall hangings, torans, raisin artefacts, mirrors, carpets, rugs, furniture, clothing, crockery, bags, jewellery, and food items – including dried fruits and cookies – are available here. “This exhibition is a one-stop shop for pre-Diwali purchases. I bought a lot of stuff from various stalls,” said Simran Sachdeva, a buyer. Automobile, utensils, and jewellery traders were expecting a good increase in sales tomorrow on the eve of Dhanteras.
