Jalandhar: Awareness campaign launched against burning of paddy residue

Jalandhar: As part of its ongoing efforts to prevent paddy residue burning, the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Langroya, organized an awareness program at DAN College of Education for Women on Saturday. A total of 105 students participated in the event, which aimed to educate young people about environmentally sustainable crop residue management (CRM). The program was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Pradeep Kumar, Deputy Director, KVK, Langroya. During the technical session, Dr. Pradeep Kumar explained the harmful effects of paddy residue burning and discussed sustainable residue management techniques. He guided the students on innovative and beneficial uses for paddy residue, emphasizing that preserving residue improves soil nutrition, supports micro-organisms, and improves long-term soil health. He also provided information about the latest CRM machinery, such as balers, smart seeders, surface seeders, and super seeders, and urged students to play an active role in spreading awareness in their communities. Dr. Rajinder Kaur, Assistant Professor (Home Science), shared details of various CRM activities conducted by KVK. She also spoke to students about saving the environment through healthy practices, the importance of nutrition for all ages, and the need to adopt kitchen gardening to improve family health. To encourage student participation, KVK Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar organized speech declamation and debate competitions on the theme of “Crop Residue Management and Conservation of the Environment.” These activities were conducted under the supervision of KVK experts and college faculty. Students participated enthusiastically, and winners were recognized and rewarded.
