It is the government’s duty to protect the elderly: High Court

Tamil Nadu : The Madurai Bench of the Chennai High Court said that it is the duty of the government to protect the youth.

FLORIDA BY MADURAI K RAMESH: There is a growing trend of leaving the elderly alone in public places in Tamil Nadu. The elderly left alone in this way are suffering from health issues and are facing a lot of problems.

There are already guidelines regarding the establishment of National Senior Citizens Institutions. However, these centers have not been established in any district. Therefore, they had demanded that an order be issued to properly establish the facilities of the National Senior Citizens in all the districts of Tamil Nadu.

The petition was recently heard by the Supreme Court of India under the bench of Justices S.M. Subramaniam and Maria Claude. At that time, it was regretted that crimes like mass murder and robbery of the elderly were increasing. Apart from this, the establishment of places of residence for the elderly was also not done properly. The judges said that it is the duty of the government to protect the youth.

After this, the lawyer appearing on behalf of the Central Government said that the Central Government will only sign the funds for setting up the Senior Citizens Center. The state facility should set up the Senior Citizens Center itself.

After this, the judges intervened and asked what is the job of the Central Government to monitor whether the funds provided are being used properly or not.

After this, the judges issued an order: It is the duty of the government to fulfill and protect the disciples of senior citizens. Therefore, the Chief Secretary of the Union Social Justice and Empowerment Department and the Chief Secretary of the Social Welfare Department of the Tamil Government are being implicated in this case. The Central and State Government should take steps to answer to set up the National Senior Citizens Center in all protections. The judges said that the hearing of this case is to be held for 2 weeks.
