Internet shut down in Maharashtra’s Akola a day after the riots

Akola (IANS) | A day after riots broke out in Maharashtra’s Akola, police suspended internet services to prevent rumour-mongering, while the violence left one dead and nine others injured. Apart from this, many private and government vehicles were burnt. Officials gave this information on Monday. A controversial post on social media led to a clash between the two communities. This resulted in sloganeering, stone pelting and arson. Additional police force was also sent there on Sunday.

Akola Superintendent of Police Sandeep M. Ghuge told IANS: “The situation is normal now, in the wake of yesterday’s violent clashes following objectionable posts on social media. We have urged people not to spread or believe in rumours.”

To pacify the raging mob, Collector Neema Arora had imposed prohibitory orders and banned the carrying of any weapons in the city, including two fire brigade vans at Rajarajeshwar Setu in Harihar Peth area and torches to set houses on fire. Several vehicles including Prayas were burnt.

“So far we have arrested over 100 people in connection with the riots and further investigation is on,” Ghuge said.

Apart from some people involved in Sunday’s violence, a case has also been registered against the person who posted the provocative post.

Deputy Chief Minister and Guardian Minister of Akola Devendra Fadnavis is closely monitoring the situation after the violence broke out around midnight on Sunday and has ordered additional forces to be sent there.
