Internal feud in AIUDF in Dhubri, anger over Ali Akbar Mia joining the party

Assam: A rift has emerged within the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) in Assam’s Dhubri district. The party’s decision to induct former Congress MLA Ali Akbar Mia into the party has been strongly opposed by local leaders and grassroots workers. The political storm erupted on Saturday, March 8, in the Birsing-Jarua constituency, where angry party members took to the streets, accusing the leadership of ignoring the sentiments of longtime party workers.

The uproar followed a high-profile joining ceremony held at Dhubri MLA Nazrul Haque’s home on Saturday, where Mia formally joined the AIUDF. This ceremony, expected to strengthen the party’s local political base, instead sparked sharp reactions within its district organization.

The AIUDF Birsing-Jarua District Committee called an emergency meeting to discuss the matter. Immediately after the meeting, angry party workers staged a massive demonstration, raising slogans such as “Ali Akbar Miya go back,” “Ali Akbar Miya murdabad,” and “Ali Akbar Miya husiyar (beware),” reflecting widespread anger against his joining.

During the meeting, committee members unanimously passed a resolution opposing Miya’s return to the party. Several leaders argued that the decision was made without consulting the grassroots organization and warned that the move deeply hurt party workers who had been loyal to the AIUDF for years.

Local activists alleged that they had faced trouble from Miya and his supporters during previous political clashes. Although reports indicate that Miya formally apologized to party workers upon joining, this gesture appears to have done little to calm the anger brewing within the party.

“The sentiments of the workers who formed this organisation cannot be ignored,” said a local committee leader, warning that if the party leadership fails to reconsider the move, the cadres may be forced to take “tough decisions.”
