Instructions to take action against jailer, High Court took cognizance of beating case

Bilaspur. Taking cognizance of the news of 10 prisoners getting injured due to the beating of the jailer in Sarangarh, the Executive Chairman of the State Legal Services Authority, Justice Gautam Bhaduri, has sought an investigation report. Recently, news was published that 10 prisoners were beaten up in Sarangarh jail due to the beating of jailer Sandeep Kashyap. The jailer had demanded money from him. A prisoner, Dinesh Chauhan of Barmkela, was asked to give him Rs 50,000 from his home. Angered by not getting the money, they beat him and other prisoners. The prisoners were injured in the fight, some of whom are in critical condition. One prisoner’s head is also broken.

In the matter, Justice Bhaduri has directed the Jail Director General to submit the report of necessary investigation and action. Apart from this, the District Judge of Raigarh and the Chairman of the District Legal Services Committee have also been asked to provide necessary legal assistance to the prisoners and their families and submit the report.

It is noteworthy that the Supreme Court has also from time to time ordered to provide legal aid to the prisoners detained in jail. Apart from this, Justice Ramesh Sinha, Chief Justice of Chhattisgarh High Court and Chief Patron of SALSA, has also inspected the jail from time to time and stressed on protecting the human rights of the prisoners detained in the jails of Chhattisgarh and treating them humanely.
