India climbs to fourth place in the medal tally; PT Usha expresses happiness
Glasgow: Expressing immense pride in the stellar performance of Indian boxers at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha lauded the country’s growing stature on the international sporting stage and hailed the achievement as a “golden day for India.”
On Saturday, Indian boxers made history by winning seven gold medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games; this marks the country’s highest-ever gold medal haul in the competition. It stands as India’s best-ever performance in the CWG boxing event.
Reacting to the Indian contingent’s rise in the medal tally, Usha spoke of the emotional impact of seeing Indian athletes clinch top honors and hearing the national anthem play on the victory podium.
“I am overjoyed; this is a golden day for India. Whenever our boxers win gold medals and the national anthem plays on the podium, it is a moment of immense pride for both me and our country,” Usha said. “Today is a big day for everyone, especially because we are winning gold medals consistently. Words cannot fully express the pride and happiness I feel.”
Despite participating in a limited number of events, India climbed from 10th to 4th place in the medal tally, securing a total of 39 medals. Crediting strong administrative support, the legendary sprinter-turned-administrator praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for constantly motivating the athletes.
She said, “Despite competing in fewer events, we managed to win 38 medals. We were ranked 10th in the medal tally but have now risen to the fourth spot. Our government, and the Prime Minister himself, motivate the athletes, congratulate them upon their return, and ensure they receive whatever assistance they require.”
The IOA chief also noted that an athlete’s success on the podium is the result of a behind-the-scenes ecosystem. He said, “Behind every athlete, there is a dedicated team: coaches, doctors, physiotherapists, masseurs, and mental trainers. With the full cooperation of the government and the Indian Olympic Association, alongside the efforts of various sports federations, our athletes are receiving the support they deserve.”
