Impact of bad weather in Jammu & Kashmir, KPDCL issues safety guidelines and alerts
JAMMU AND KASHMIR: Anticipating inclement weather, the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) has issued a high-alert advisory. To safeguard the power supply infrastructure and prevent untoward incidents, the corporation has issued several important guidelines for the general public and its field staff.
KPDCL has advised people to avoid approaching electrical equipment and power lines during heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds. If a broken power line or damaged pole is spotted, one must not attempt to touch it; instead, the matter should be immediately reported to the concerned electricity department’s control room or helpline.
The power corporation has appealed to the public not to venture out unnecessarily during bad weather. In the event of a power outage, residents should not tamper with lines or transformers themselves but should wait for authorized technical personnel; this helps minimize the risk of accidents.
Instructions issued to field staff mandate the use of safety gear, adherence to established safety protocols, exercising extra caution in high-risk areas until weather conditions normalize, and completely de-energizing the relevant line before undertaking any repair work. Staff have also been directed to remain fully prepared to handle emergency situations.
KPDCL has instructed all its divisions and control rooms to remain vigilant around the clock and ensure a swift response to any emergency. Additionally, repair teams and essential resources have been positioned in vulnerable areas to facilitate the rapid restoration of power supplies disrupted by the weather.
This advisory follows the Meteorological Department’s forecast of heavy rain and strong winds in the region. Such weather conditions increase the risk of incidents like falling trees, damage to electricity poles, and snapped power lines, all of which can disrupt the power supply. KPDCL has appealed to citizens to rely only on official information, avoid rumors, and immediately report any electricity-related emergencies to the department. The corporation states that all necessary teams are on alert and consumer safety is the top priority.
