Illegal drug sale: Action taken against 960 pharmacies

Tamil Nadu: In Tamil Nadu, the licenses of 960 pharmacies selling medicines illegally have been temporarily cancelled in the last three years.

Similarly, the State Drug Control Directorate has announced that the licenses of 70 pharmacies and drug distribution companies involved in illegal activities have been permanently cancelled.

More than 40,000 pharmacies and hundreds of drug manufacturing companies operate in Tamil Nadu. The State Drug Control Directorate monitors their operations and business activities.

In particular, checks are also conducted to see if certain medicines are being sold illegally without a doctor’s prescription. If such irregularities or violations are found, appropriate investigations are ordered and cases are registered.

In this regard, drug control officials found that illegal sales have been taking place in thousands of shops in the last three years.

In this regard, the State Drug Licensing and Control Authorities stated: “In general, it is wrong to sell medicines in pharmacies without a doctor’s prescription. In particular, the sale of some important medicines in this way may lead to illegal activities.” Accordingly, the licenses of 960 pharmacies selling medicines illegally have been temporarily revoked from May 2023 till now. In addition, the licenses of 70 pharmacies and institutions selling contraceptive pills and sleeping pills without a doctor’s prescription have been completely revoked.
