IIT Madras Professor P. Ravindran included in the UN Independent Scientific Panel on AI

Tamil Nadu: Professor P. Ravindran of IIT Madras has been appointed to the Independent International Scientific Panel on the Impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) established by the United Nations (UN).
It has also been stated that this group will conduct a scientific assessment of the impact of AI on society.
Details: On August 26 last year, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution to establish an Independent International Scientific Panel on AI. This panel is the first global scientific body on artificial intelligence, bringing together renowned experts from different fields and disciplines to assess how AI is changing people’s lives and society around the world.
Speaking at the India AI Impact Summit in Delhi last week, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that the Independent International Scientific Panel on AI comprises 40 renowned experts from various fields and sectors.
Professor P. Ravindran, who has been appointed to this committee, is the founding director of the AI Centre at IIT Madras and director of the Wadhwani Institute for Data Science, with over three decades of experience in AI.
Speaking to reporters about his appointment, Ravindran said, “AI impacts everyone. Sometimes it can impact those involved without them even realizing it. Therefore, this committee will play a crucial role in ensuring that AI has a positive impact on the world.”
