Iconic Baga River at risk of irreversible damage

Calangute: According to the Bio-Diversity Management Committee (BMC) of Calangute Panchayat, the iconic Baga River in Calangute is facing irreversible destruction and immediate action is needed to stop the destruction of mangroves and river biodiversity.

In a complaint to the Goa State Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) and other authorities, the Calangute Gram Panchayat Biodiversity Panel said unauthorized construction activities on the banks of the Baga river, including indiscriminate dumping of garbage, release of sewage water and land filling were being carried out. Which caused irreparable damage to the river, which is a global tourist attraction.

In the complaint, the biodiversity panel said, “The Baga as a national river holds vital importance not only for its ecological value but also for its cultural and environmental significance. However, due to unauthorized construction activities on its banks “Irreparable damage has been caused.” For its fragile ecosystem.”
“The mangrove forests along the river serve as important habitats for a variety of flora and fauna, which play a vital role in maintaining the ecological balance of the region. In addition, the river itself is home to a rich biodiversity of aquatic life. It supports many species, including endangered species that depend on its waters for survival.

“The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) had inspected the Baga river in 2019. The report prepared by GSPCB was placed before the recently held Gram Sabha. The complaint said that the Gram Sabha decided to call for joint site inspection of Baga river as we found that Baga river is getting more polluted due to unauthorized activities along the river banks.
It said, “We strongly urge you (GSPCB) to take immediate action to stop all land filling and illegal construction activities along the banks of Baga river and impose strict rules and penalties for those responsible for the destruction of the river.” Do it.”
