IAS officer G.S. Sameeran takes over as the 75th Commissioner of the Greater Chennai Corporation.

Tamil Nadu: IAS officer G.S. Samiran has assumed office as the 75th Commissioner of the Greater Chennai Corporation. With extensive administrative experience, Samiran is considered one of the senior officers in the Tamil Nadu cadre. His appointment is expected to bring new responsibility and direction to the Chennai Municipal Administration.

G.S. Samiran completed his initial medical education at Thiruvananthapuram University in Kerala. He then studied law at the National Law University in New Delhi, further strengthening his academic foundation. He joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 2012, marking the beginning of his administrative career.

After his selection in the IAS, he began his career with training in Thoothukudi. He was then appointed as Assistant Collector in Paramakudi, Ramanathapuram district, where he gained administrative experience. He subsequently demonstrated his efficiency by serving in various important positions.

During his administrative career, G.S. Samiran also served as the Director of the Fisheries Department. He also served as the District Collector of Tenkasi and Coimbatore districts, where he focused on development and administrative reforms. His work ethic and effective implementation of schemes were widely appreciated.

He subsequently served as the Managing Director of the Tamil Nadu Slum Relocation Board and the Tamil Nadu Water and Drainage Board. In these positions, he spearheaded several important urban development and infrastructure projects.

In particular, he has prior experience with the Greater Chennai Corporation. He served as Joint Commissioner (Works) in 2023-24. Based on this experience, he has now been directly appointed to the post of Commissioner.

His administrative services have been honored numerous times. In 2022, he received the State Award for his work related to the safety of girls. In 2021, he was also honored for the effective implementation of employment and skill development schemes. In 2020, he received a national award for his outstanding work in the fisheries sector.

With his new role, G.S. Samiran is expected to play a key role in Chennai’s development, urban management, and strengthening civic amenities. Administrative experts believe that his experience could lead to further improvements in the functioning of the Greater Chennai Corporation.
