Himachal: Timely evacuation saved lives from collapse of six houses

Himachal Pradesh: Six houses collapsed due to heavy rains in Jaisinghpur area of Palampur region last night, causing extensive damage but no loss of life. These houses were located near a sinking hillock whose walls developed cracks during the day itself, forcing residents to evacuate the houses in time. Timely evacuation averted a major tragedy when the houses collapsed. Sub-divisional Magistrate Sanjeev Thakur said the administration has reached the spot and provided immediate assistance to the affected families. All the families have been shifted to safer places, including government buildings, till further arrangements are made.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Centre has issued an alert for the Kangra Valley, warning of possible flash floods, cloudbursts, landslides, mudslides and hailstorms in vulnerable areas. It has forecast intermittent heavy rains, and rain and thundershowers are likely at many places in Himachal Pradesh from September 3. On the restoration front, the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board (HPSEB) has restored power supply in the affected areas of Palampur, Baijnath and Jaisinghpur, while the Public Works Department has reopened internal roads for traffic. Officials have urged residents to remain cautious as heavy rains could make fragile slopes even more unstable.
