Heritage Hospitality Project launched in Kaziranga

Assam : Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated Kaziranga Heritage on March 3, 2026, marking the state’s first major public-private partnership in heritage hospitality. The project brings together the Assam Tourism Development Corporation and Centre Point Hospitality Group to promote eco-tourism in the UNESCO-listed Kaziranga National Park landscape.
This heritage estate, nestled between the floodplains of the Brahmaputra and the Kohora River, blends colonial-era architecture with modern accommodation. At its heart is Bonani Bungalow, a 1938 structure with guest records that showcase Kaziranga’s transformation from fragile grasslands to a global wildlife haven. High plinths, deep verandas, and steep roofs handle seasonal flooding and monsoons, reminiscent of Assam’s practical building style. Twenty-eight rooms are spread across the heritage zone: 10 in the Bonani Bungalow, eight in the Bonoshri, which features art and literature on Assam’s ecology and Vaishnavite traditions, six riverside cottages, and four luxury suites with plunge pools overlooking the Orchid Park. Natural materials and elevated design prioritize climate resilience.
A 48-seat restaurant recreates Assamese recipes using wood-fired stoves, using local ingredients and adding a Southeast Asian touch. Its Jaapi-inspired ceiling, created by ceramic artist Jaya Boro with copper pinnacles, is a symbol of welcome.
Mridu Moshum Bora’s artwork depicts Vaishnavite dance and Kaziranga wildlife, while paying tribute to musicians Bhupen Hazarika and Zubeen Garg. Archival photographs by conservationist Edward Pritchardji show the early struggles to save the park’s rhinos and grasslands.
Local architects, artists, historians, and artisans shaped the estate, preserving Assam’s cultural threads. Officials consider the PPP a model of sustainable tourism, drawing visitors to Kaziranga’s centuries-old conservation story without harming its ecology.
