Gujarat battling heavy rains and waterlogging, nine killed in two days
Ahmedabad (IANS). Nine people lost their lives in two days in Gujarat. Heavy and incessant rain lashed the state. Some areas have received more than 200 mm of rain in the last 30 hours.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rain in isolated parts of various districts on Saturday, with light to moderate rains over the next few days.
Incessant rains threw normal life out of gear in various districts including Junagadh, Jamnagar, Morbi, Kutch, Surat and Tapi. Heavy waterlogging was seen in many towns and cities, while roads were closed in rural areas.
The State Emergency Operation Center (SEOC) shared data that 37 talukas (administrative subdivisions) of the state received more than 100 mm of rain in a 30-hour period ending 12 noon on Friday.
The highest rainfall was recorded in Vyara taluka of Tapi district, which received a whopping 299 mm of rain within the same time frame.
Other areas severely affected by heavy rains were Junagadh city (298 mm), Tapi’s Valod taluka (288 mm), Surat’s Mahuva (256 mm), Jamnagar city (236 mm), Surat’s Bardoli (223 mm), Mendarda Are included. Junagadh (207 mm), and Dolwan (206 mm) in Tapi district.
Additionally, Jamnagar taluka of Jamnagar district received 177 mm of rain between 6 am and 12 noon. There was heavy waterlogging in Jamnagar city on Friday.
The IMD’s forecast for the coming days indicates heavy rain at isolated places over districts like Gandhinagar, Kheda, Ahmedabad, Anand, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Navsari and Valsad on Saturday, followed by rain over the state on Sunday and Monday. Light to moderate rain will occur over different parts.
According to the SEOC report, nine people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents due to heavy rains in the last two days. These incidents include the death of four children due to falling walls in Panchmahal district and Anand. Besides, two persons drowned in Jamnagar and Aravalli districts, while a woman drowned in flood waters in Lathi taluka of Amreli district.
Gujarat is facing the effects of heavy rainfall and water-logging, therefore efforts are being made to mitigate the effects and ensure the safety of the residents.
