Government-owned Rapid Transport Corporation’s Volvo buses: Will enter service next week.

Tamil Nadu: Officials said that 20 Volvo luxury buses purchased by the Government Rapid Transport Corporation will be put into service next week.

The transport department is undertaking a drive to improve government buses and make them more competitive with private omni buses. As part of this initiative, the State Rapid Transport Corporation has purchased 130 new buses with advanced technology this year (2025-2026). These buses are currently being manufactured in Bengaluru.

Of these, 110 buses have non-air-conditioned seats and sleeping berths. The remaining 20 buses are Volvo multi-axle luxury buses with only seating facilities. After the manufacturing of these 20 luxury buses was completed, they were handed over to the Government Express Transport Corporation on Wednesday.

In this regard, R. Mohan, Managing Director of the Government Rapid Transport Corporation, said: “After the manufacturing of the Volvo multi-axle luxury buses was fully completed, a test run was conducted at the company premises.

In the first phase, eight buses were brought to Chennai. Now, Volvo has handed over all the buses to the Rapid Transport Corporation. All 20 buses have been brought to Chennai. These buses will be launched for public use next week.”

The Chief Minister and the Transport Minister will inaugurate the Volvo buses. He added that these buses are planned to be used for people traveling to their hometowns for Christmas, New Year, and Pongal.
