Government has no say in the affairs of gurus: Giani Gargaj

Punjab: Giani Gargaj has stated in a statement that government interference in religious matters is not appropriate and that matters related to the Gurus should remain solely within the jurisdiction of religious institutions. His statement has sparked a new debate in religious and political circles. Giani Gargaj stated that the traditions and sanctity of Sikhism are extremely sacred and must be protected from outside interference. He stressed that any government should refrain from directly interfering in religious matters, as this not only harms the traditions but also hurts the sentiments of those associated with the faith. He also stated that preserving the history of the Gurus and their principles is the sole responsibility of religious institutions and the community. Administrative or political interference in such matters often creates misunderstandings and leads to disputes. According to him, if religious matters are handled independently, unity and trust within the community are strengthened. In his statement, Giani Gargaj described the “Vigilant Panth” as the most effective security mechanism. He stated that religious discipline and internal awareness are the greatest strengths of any community. According to him, self-control and religious dignity, rather than external control, can keep society safe and united. His statement has evoked varied reactions. Some religious organizations have supported his views and stated that freedom in religious matters should be maintained. They believe this allows communities to better preserve their traditions. Meanwhile, some social and legal experts argue that government intervention is limited to matters necessary within the law and order and constitutional framework. They argue that if a religious issue impacts public order or law and order, the government has the right to intervene. This entire issue has once again sparked debate about religious freedom and the government’s role. Many view it as a matter of balance between faith and administration, while others view it as a need for caution in sensitive religious matters. Currently, the debate over Giani Gargjaj’s statement continues, and more reactions are likely to emerge in the coming days.
