The order states that for now, no action should be taken against those keeping parrots and other birds. Chhattisgarh Forest Minister Kedar Kashyap said that the Forest Department has currently suspended the instructions issued earlier by the state government regarding parrots and other birds kept in homes. In this regard, technical guidance will be taken from the Ministry of Forest and Climate Change, New Delhi. Those who have parrots in their homes will have to give written information about this to the nearest Forest Department office. On August 23, orders for action were issued from the Principal Chief Forest Conservator and Forest Force Chief’s office. Instructions were issued to take action regarding the rampant sale of parrots and other birds protected by law in the state including Raipur district. Now amending this order, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Conservation) Chhattisgarh Atal Nagar, Raipur has sent a letter to all the Chief Forest Conservators and Forest Divisional Officers. Bilaspur DFO of Chhattisgarh had given a 7-day ultimatum to the people. There, all the birds were asked to be taken out of the cage and handed over to the Kanha Pendari Zoo management. For this, a toll free number (18002337000) was also issued. According to the forest department officials, buying, selling and rearing parrots or other birds, which are included in the schedule of Wildlife Protection Act 1972 as amended in May-2022, is completely prohibited. It has been placed in the category of crime. According to Bilaspur Forest Department SDO Abhinav Kumar, keeping parrots in cages is having a bad effect on biodiversity. Now those who hunt and smuggle them will be monitored. A ban on the sale, purchase and rearing of birds is being considered.
