Goa is the accident capital of the country: Minister

Panaji: Expressing concern over the number of accidents taking place in the state, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Monday said that Goa has become the accident capital of the country.

“Many young people die in accidents and parents should advise their children to drive carefully. You have to have social awareness on this topic and parents also have to be responsible. There is pressure on the Hospital and Faculty of Medicine of Goa (GMCH), Bambolim due to the alarming increase in accident cases, but we have to cope. Goa has become the accident capital of the country, so we look at it proportionately. The rate has to come down and creating awareness about traffic accidents is not only the duty of the government but the society should also participate in it”, he said.

The Health Minister said that the state needs at least 25 new ambulances.

“There is huge pressure on the ambulance. Sometimes we face problems, i.e. when an accident occurs we have to reach within seven minutes. Although ambulances in Goa take less time to reach accident sites compared to other states, it needs improvement. Goa is the only state that has implemented an advanced system to save lives. We have formed a committee to map the areas where ambulances are required”, Rane said.
