Gang of women pickpockets active in Delhi Metro busted, three arrested

New Delhi (IANS) | Police on Thursday busted a gang of three women who were involved in pickpocketing in the Delhi Metro. The accused have been identified as Gayathri (26), Anita (40) and Savita (35). All three are residents of Faridpuri in Anand Parbat area of central Delhi.

Police said that 60-year-old P. Jaya Bhagya Lakshmi, a resident of Bengaluru, lodged a complaint on April 1 that someone stole her purse in the metro running between Karol Bagh to Rajeev Chowk. The purse contained gold ornaments and house keys.

During the investigation, CCTV footage from Karol Bagh to Rajiv Chowk metro station was thoroughly examined, said Jitendra Mani, Deputy Commissioner of Metro Police. CCTV footage installed inside the train was also scanned. On analysis, the movements of three female passengers were found suspicious.

The team immediately swung into action and the three were nabbed within 24 hours, he said.

During interrogation, the accused women accepted their crime. A stolen purse was also recovered from his house which had gold chain, ring and gold studs and key of the victim’s house.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police said that this gang used to wash their hands in metro trains, crowded buses and trains.

They used to surround the one who was to be hunted, he said. Then by diverting his attention, she used to steal valuables. The stolen goods were distributed among all. This is how he used to live.
