Kolkata (IANS) | A senior citizen in Kolkata died of COVID-19 on Friday, taking the death toll due to coronavirus in West Bengal to four in the last 26 days.
Sources in the state health department said that the deceased person has been identified as Subir Kar (80). Sources said he died late on Thursday and the death certificate mentioned that he was Covid-19 positive.
He was admitted to the Infectious Diseases Hospital at Beliaghata in North Kolkata, where he died.
Just two days ago, on April 19, the news of the death of Mantu Ram Bar (79) had come from the same hospital.
The first Covid-related death in 2023 was recorded on March 25, when Gobindo Kundu (72), a resident of Nadia district, succumbed. This death was reported after a gap of three months.
The second death was reported on April 13, when Bhaskar Das (76), a resident of Regent Park area of Kolkata, died at a private hospital in the city.
As you can see all the four dead persons were senior citizens and all of them had co-morbidities, said a health department official.
On 18 April, the West Bengal Health Department issued an advisory asking people to make maximum use of facemasks in public places.
The advisory also advised people that if anyone is found to be COVID-19 positive, they should remain in home-isolation for at least a week.
It has been said in the advisory, if the symptoms of corona are found more or you start feeling shortness of breath, immediately report to the hospital or doctor.
If a young child or a high-risk individual tests positive for COVID-19, the concerned individual should be taken to a hospital or doctor without delay.
