Four elephants got electrocuted in Parvathipuram, Andhra Pradesh
Visakhapatnam (IANS) | Four wild elephants died of electrocution in the early hours of Friday in Parvathipuram-Manyam district of Andhra Pradesh. The incident took place near Katragadda village in Bhamini mandal of the district near the Odisha border.
The elephant was found lying dead near an electric transformer. The villagers told that they probably came in contact with the transformer, due to which they died.
On the information of the villagers, police and forest department officials reached the village. The authorities took over the investigation. The power transformer was not secured from all sides.
A herd of six elephants had recently entered the area from neighboring Odisha. Four of them died due to electrocution.
The incident took place when the forest department was working on a plan to create an elephant zone for 14 elephants, of which eight were already present in the forest.
Forest officials said they would take steps to protect the remaining 10 elephants. Animal rights activists have demanded immediate measures to set up elephant rehabilitation centres.
They say that in the current summer season, elephants are being forced to come out of their habitats for food and water but are becoming victims of electric shock and other incidents.
