Four arrested for harassing interfaith couple in Hyderabad

Four people have been arrested for allegedly misbehaving and attacking a man for hanging out with a woman from another community here a few days ago, police said on Saturday.

The case was registered on the basis of an undated video clip of the incident circulated on social media, in which some people can reportedly be heard telling the man not to hang out with the woman because he (the man) belongs to a particular community and is “lying” regarding his name.

A man is seen holding an infant in his lap as a woman stands next to him at the historic Mecca Masjid, after someone in the group allegedly abused and attacked her, even ​That the man was also heard saying “She (the woman) is my wife and (the child) is her daughter”.
After this the group asks the person to show his Aadhar card.
Based on the video, police said, a case was registered at Charminar police station on March 26 under section 295-A of the IPC, which deals with deliberate and malicious acts intended to insult the religion or religious beliefs of any class. Outraging his religious sentiments, under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), and relevant sections of the Juvenile Justice Act.
