Following indiscriminate firing in Torbung, Manipur Police registered an FIR and increased security

Guwahati: Police have initiated a criminal investigation after armed Kuki groups opened indiscriminate fire in the Torbung area on December 16, 2025, prompting an immediate security response, officials said.

Authorities registered a First Information Report and moved swiftly to stabilise the situation by deploying additional security personnel. Joint teams of police and security forces intensified patrols and carried out large-scale combing operations across the affected localities to prevent further violence and reassure residents.

Senior officers, including the Deputy Inspector General of Police, visited Torbung to review the ground situation, oversee operational preparedness, and coordinate enforcement measures.

During coordinated search operations in the nearby Kangvai area, security forces seized a significant cache of weapons and ammunition. The recovery included one long-range improvised pumpi, four medium-range improvised pumpis, one barrel-blasted medium-range improvised pumpi, a single-barrel firearm, and 17 empty cartridge cases of different calibres.

The operation also led to the discovery of an improvised explosive device weighing around three kilogrammes. Bomb Disposal Squad personnel safely defused and destroyed the device, averting potential loss of life.

Security agencies have maintained heightened deployment in the region, placing the area under close surveillance. Manipur Police confirmed through a social media statement that the situation is currently under control.

The incident underscores persistent security challenges in the region, where tensions involving armed groups continue to test law enforcement efforts.
