Fire breaks out in Dhanbad Medical College, patients evacuated safely
Dhanbad: A massive fire broke out at Shaheed Nirmal Mahato Memorial Medical College and Hospital in Dhanbad late on Friday night. It was a matter of relief that amidst the chaos, the patients were taken out safely. The fire brigade brought the fire under control at around 1 am. At around 11 pm, a fire broke out in the dialysis center of the hospital and within no time the smoke spread to many wards. 15 to 20 women were admitted in the Gynecology ward near the Dialysis Centre, while two dozen children were admitted in the Neo Natal Care Unit and NICU and SNCU. The family members were successful in taking him out amid the stampede. Many patients were taken out by breaking the grill. Smoke also spread in Medicine, Eye & ENT, Orthopedics and other departments. There were screams everywhere. Patients and staff started running here and there. About 400 patients were admitted in the hospital. Everyone was evacuated safely.
As soon as the information about the accident was received, the police of Saraidhela police station reached the spot. The soldiers, along with the personnel deployed in the hospital, evacuated many patients and their families. The fire could be controlled after about two hours. Superintendent in-charge of the hospital, Dr. Jyoti Ranjan Prasad has said that all the patients have been evacuated safely. SDM Uday Rajak and SP City also reached the spot late in the night. Information about how the fire broke out is not available. It is suspected that the fire broke out due to short circuit. Three days later, on January 31, a fire broke out in Ashirwad Apartment in Dhanbad, in which 14 people died.
